Regarding tomorrow’s topping-out ceremony for the staff housing building at the mill, the FDP Norderney states: We approved the construction because additional living space is fundamentally sensible. At the same time, we continue to view the project critically.
From the FDP’s perspective, the state should not permanently act as a developer itself when more economical solutions through private investors, for example, are possible. Private contracts can often be implemented more cost-effectively and efficiently. With construction costs of around 5.2 million euros for 16 apartments, it is also questionable whether this investment can ever be presented as even remotely economical through rental income. In the end, the taxpayer bears the burden.
In addition, the actual future demand is, in our view, uncertain. Through digitalization and more efficient administrative structures, personnel requirements could also decrease in the long term. Furthermore, the city is tying up significant funds with this project that may be lacking elsewhere. For the future, we therefore view it critically when the public sector increasingly acts as a developer and landlord itself.
