<\/p>\nDo Not Deter Day Visitors \u2013 Smart Visitor Management Instead of Declining Attractiveness<\/p>\n
The FDP Norderney addressed the current discussion about the decline in day visitors from 300,000 to 200,000 annually at their monthly meeting. The occasion was the spa director’s statement that this decline is good for the density*. The Free Democrats are puzzled by this assessment and see it as the wrong signal \u2013 both to visitors and to the local economy. <\/p>\n

“Day visitors have always been part of Norderney. They are an important component of our tourism, enliven retail, gastronomy, and services, and contribute to the diversity on the island. We consider it wrong to welcome a decline in these visitors,” explains Manfred Hahnen, parliamentary group leader of the FDP and supervisory board member of the state spa.<\/p>\n
Particularly in the current economic situation, one must handle such statements sensitively. Many businesses are already under pressure due to increased costs, changed consumer behavior, and an overall more difficult economic situation. The unbridled tourism growth of recent years is over. It is all the more important not to carelessly disparage existing visitor structures or portray individual visitor groups as dispensable. <\/p>\n
The FDP also points out that some findings and basic assumptions from the living space concept, which they have already frequently criticized, still date from a time before Corona and before the current economically difficult framework conditions. What was discussed back then under the impression of strong growth must be reassessed today. The reality for many businesses, employees, and families on the island has changed significantly. <\/p>\n
Of course, there must be discussion about capacity limits, visitor flows, and quality in tourism. Particularly on heavily frequented days, smart concepts are needed to better manage traffic, waste, beach use, and downtown areas. However, from the FDP Norderney’s perspective, the answer cannot be to make individual areas of the island less attractive or to make it more difficult for visitor groups to visit. <\/p>\n
Instead, modern, forward-looking visitor management is needed. This includes better information before arrival, digital notifications about capacity levels, attractive offers outside peak times, clear route guidance, and close coordination between the ferry company, city, state spa, gastronomy, hospitality, and retail. <\/p>\n
“Those who lose day visitors lose not only short-term purchasing power. Many of today’s regular guests, long-term guests, or later vacation rental users first got to know Norderney as day visitors. The day visit is often the first contact with our island \u2013 and from this, a long-term connection often develops,” says the FDP Norderney. The Free Democrats warn against portraying day visitors as a burden across the board. Rather, the question must be how visitor flows can be managed so that both visitors and locals benefit. Quality, comfort, sustainability, and economic strength are not contradictions, but must be considered together. <\/p>\n
“Norderney lives from tourism \u2013 in all its breadth. Our goal must be tourism that is better organized, not one that excludes or deters certain visitor groups. Smart visitor management is the right path \u2013 not a gradual reduction in the attractiveness of individual island areas.”<\/p>\n

The FDP Norderney therefore calls for a factual and contemporary debate about the future of tourism on the island. A decline in day visitors must not be prematurely sold as a success, but must be an occasion to look closely and take the changed economic framework conditions seriously. <\/p>\n
